The COVID-19 epidemic is going to have a negative impact on firms and households throughout the world, not just in terms of its direct effects on economic activity and employment, but also indirectly in that it is obstructing the production of official statistics. There is the risk that it will compromise a key tool for guiding those who will have to make economic policy decisions, as well as for informing the markets and the general public. The problem must be addressed by forging stronger synergies between national statistics institutes, other public entities, and firms specialized in constructing economic databases and large-scale technological platforms.
