Project Leap Phase 2: results of testing quantum-resistant cryptography in real-world payment systems
The Innovation Hub of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Banca d'Italia, Banque de France, Deutsche Bundesbank, Nexi-Colt, and SWIFT successfully completed Phase 2 of Project Leap and tested the implementation of post-quantum cryptography in real-world payment systems.
The experiment involved replacing conventional digital signatures with post-quantum cryptographic algorithms in the execution of liquidity transfers.
The final report outlines the results of applying post-quantum cryptographic protocols and illustrates both organizational and technical challenges. It also presents key findings on performance, interoperability and cryptographic agility.
The testing of post-quantum digital signatures for liquidity transfers between central banks helps to strengthen the European payment infrastructure and safeguard financial stability.
