Presentation of Banca d'Italia's Fifth Fintech Survey in Milan
On 11 March 2026, a meeting was held at the Conference Hall of the Bank's Milan Branch to present the Fifth Fintech Survey conducted by Banca d'Italia.
The event brought together representatives from the financial industry, academia, professional associations and sector experts, along with participants from Banca d'Italia and other institutions.
The opening remarks highlighted the two main trajectories along which financial innovation has evolved: an internal one, driven by traditional intermediaries, and an external one, driven by new market entrants. These trajectories have increasingly intersected through collaboration and participation. The supervisory perspective was also illustrated, with a focus on the risks emerging from technological developments and the growing hybridization of financial services.
This was followed by a presentation of the Survey's key findings, including trends in technological investments, collaboration and participation initiatives, digital strategies adopted by operators, and developments in governance frameworks.
A subsequent roundtable brought together representatives from academia, trade associations and the Bank's consumer protection area, who discussed the main operational challenges in innovating processes, products and distribution channels in a digital context, as well as the ongoing developments in the sector.
The meeting concluded with contributions focusing on projects based on Artificial Intelligence, DLTs and other digital technologies, such as cloud computing and digital identity systems, and on their applications for preventing money laundering and terrorist financing.
