Payment instruments used by customers

Banca d'Italia today publishes the note "Payment instruments used by customers" in the "Methods and Sources: Special Topics" section of the Statistics series.

The note describes developments in retail payments in Italy between 2018 and 2025, highlighting the strong growth in the use of digital payment instruments, particularly payment cards and instant credit transfers. It also examines the continuing role of cash and access to cash services across the country, geographical differences in the use of electronic payments, and the increasing digitalization of payments to and collections by public administrations.
