New euro banknotes: ECB launches survey to choose among the shortlisted designs

The European Central Bank (ECB) has launched an online survey to select the future series of euro banknotes from among ten shortlisted designs. The survey is open to all euro-area residents, who can express their preference until 21 September 2026 and thus contribute to the final choice.

This survey complements a similar study that will be conducted by an independent research company among a representative sample of euro area citizens. The results of both surveys will contribute to the ECB Governing Council’s final decision on the design of the new banknotes, which is expected by the end of the year.

The shortlisted designs were selected by a jury of 21 experts in different fields, including graphic design, communication, neuroscience, and history. Each expert was nominated by the central bank of a euro area country. The selected designs are based on two themes, 'European culture' and 'Rivers and birds', and everyone in Europe is invited to share their views.

The selected proposal will then be further developed and tested before entering production and, subsequently, circulation. The new series of banknotes will make use of technological advances to stay ahead of counterfeiting. They will feature enhanced and more advanced security features to improve ease of authentication and accessibility, also for visually impaired people.
