MoF Platform on Sustainable Finance: new tools to simplify ESG reporting for SMEs

22 December 2025

The Platform on Sustainable Finance of the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance (MoF) has entered the operational phase of its activities to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in addressing/with regard to sustainability issues, introducing new tools to facilitate dialogue with the banking system on environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors.

As highlighted in the 2024 Annual Report of the MoF Platform, published today, the Platform's work over the past year has contributed to improving the quality and accessibility of information on climate and energy risks, developing shared tools to streamline the exchange of ESG data between SMEs and financial intermediaries, and strengthening initiatives addressing natural disaster risk.

An interoperability framework has also been published, linking the Document for the Sustainability Dialogue between SMEs and Banks with the Voluntary Standard for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (VSME) developed/drawn up by the European Financial Reporting Advisory Group (EFRAG). This tool helps to reduce information duplication and burdens for firms.

New nationwide training and knowledge-sharing/information exchange initiatives will be rolled out in 2026 to support SMEs in managing sustainability requirements.

The MoF Platform on Sustainable Finance, established in 2022, is chaired by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, with the participation of the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy, Banca d'Italia, the Italian Companies and Stock Exchange Commission (CONSOB), the Institute for the Supervision of Insurance (IVASS), and the Italian Pension Fund Supervisory Authority (COVIP).
