In line with its long-standing commitment to environmental and social issues, Banca d'Italia is continuing its collaboration with the Carabinieri Forestry, Environmental and Agrifood Command Unit on a reforestation project to plant 2,700 trees in two areas of the country. The efforts are coordinated by the non-profit organization Rete Clima as part of the Foresta Italia project.
On 28 March, in Bergamo, 1,000 trees will be planted to create a natural barrier between a residential area and a busy motorway. An innovative planting method will be used to create a tiny forest - a small, high-density woodland made up of locally sourced trees and shrubs planted closely together.
Tiny forests can play an important role in protecting urban biodiversity since they offer an ideal habitat for insects, small mammals and birds, and they can support up to 20 times more biodiversity than traditional forests.
The endeavour will continue on 1 April in Rome, in the EUR Mezzocammino area, with the second phase of the reforestation project launched last year, which will involve planting an additional 1,700 trees.
These two events bring the total number of tree planted across Italy to 7,200, including those planted in 2024.
