The European Banking Authority (EBA) today published a formal Recommendation about banks' capital and following the capital exercise, which was announced on 26 October 2011. Also the results of the capital exercise were published today.
EBA's recommendation about banks' capital forms part of a broader European package of measures, agreed by the European Council on 26 October and requesting banks to strengthen their capital positions by building up an exceptional and temporary capital buffer, so that the Core Tier 1 ratio reaches a level of 9% by the end of June 2012.
Seventy-one banks across Europe were subject to the capital exercise, including the five largest Italian banking groups (Unicredit, Intesa Sanpaolo, Monte dei Paschi di Siena, Banco Popolare and Unione di Banche Italiane)
