Banca d'Italia takes part in the Eurosystem pilot project that will give researchers access to confidential statistical data

24 March 2025

Since 2023, Banca d'Italia's Research Data Center has enabled the research community to work with individual anonymized data on Italian banks' balance sheet items (dataset iBSI) and interest rates (dataset iMIR) through its remote execution system (REX) and/or its onsite lab (LabBI, since 2025).

The Eurosystem is now launching a pilot project to allow researchers to access the data it collects from the financial sector in all euro-area countries. The aim is to promote independent research, enhance cross-country economic analysis and promote a deeper understanding of financial dynamics within the euro area.

Banca d'Italia, together with other national central banks, will serve as a data access point, providing/giving researchers access to anonymized datasets in a secure environment or the option of having the data processed on their behalf (remote execution).

The pilot project will test the effectiveness and practicality/usability of the different access modes. After 18 months of testing, the potential creation of a permanent infrastructure for research purposes will be assessed.

More information on the available datasets, researcher eligibility criteria and application details is available on the ECB's website, only in English.
