The expansionary phase enjoyed by the region’s industry came to a halt in the first half of 2007. A growth in output was recorded by the construction sector. Exports grew and tourism increased in Rome, particularly from abroad. Employment rose, mainly in the service and construction sectors. The unemployment rate fell. Bank lending to clients in Lazio accelerated, mainly owing to the growth in short-term loans to energy companies. Households’ mortgage demand slowed in response to the increase in the cost of borrowing. Savers showed a preference for bonds and government securities, while funds held in current accounts increased at a slower rate.
