This work was born out of the desire of some researchers and of the Legal Services Directorate to commemorate Gustavo Bonelli, ninety years after his death. He was the General Counsel for the Bank of Italy for many years and is considered, together with Cesare Vivante, one of the founding fathers of Italian commercial law. The editors believe that his scientific output is still immensely relevant today from a cultural point of view. The sheer breadth of his work, as seen in the bibliography included in this book, meant that the editors had to be systematic in organizing his scientific contributions. The book seeks to portray the socio-economic context of his time, and presents a selection, almost an anthology, of passages grouped into topics and prefaced by brief introductory essays. The collected texts illustrate the subjects closest to Bonelli's heart, from bankruptcy law to debt securities, from studies on legal personality to those on bank contracts, but which also include his mainly youthful writing on other areas of the law, which bear witness to his vast range of interests.
