Directorate General for Economics, Statistics and Research

The Directorate General includes about 200 economists spread over six Directorates, each composed of several Divisions.

These economists are engaged both in policy analysis and in economic research.

All policy activities draw heavily from economic research, as they often distil messages and findings of papers produced by the Bank's economists that are relevant for current policy discussions and decision-making.

There are substantial synergies between policy and research activities: policy is grounded on sound and high-quality research, while research ideas are constantly stimulated by pressing policy questions. Research output contributes both to academic debate as well as to policy discussion and decision-making.

In practice, policy analysis consists mostly in:

  • drafting internal analytical notes on current policy, economic and academic issues;
  • participating in working groups at the national and international level. These include the ECB/ESCB, the OECD, the IMF, the Bank for International Settlements, the European Commission and all other major central banks;
  • contributing to the Bank's main official publications: the Economic Bulletin, the Financial Stability Report and the Annual Report.

Irrespective of the Directorate they are assigned to, economists in this Directorate General interact closely with each other and routinely develop joint projects. However, Directorates specialize in specific activities and topics around which their policy activity and research mostly revolves.

There are four Directorates hiring this year: Economic Outlook and Monetary policy, Financial Stability, Structural Economic Analysis and Statistical Analysis.
