Born in Adria (Rovigo) on 30 December 1961, he graduated with honours in Economics and Business from the University of Pavia in 1985.

After working briefly as a researcher at the Polytechnic of Milan and at the Banca Commerciale Italiana, he continued his postgraduate studies at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, USA), obtaining an MA in Economics in 1989.

In the same year, he joined the Bank of Italy, where he contributed to the development of the quarterly econometric model and the production of macroeconomic forecasts.

In 1995, he obtained a PhD in Economics, again from the University of Pennsylvania.

In 2007, he was appointed Head of the Modelling and Forecasting Division and in 2013 he became Head of the then Economic Outlook and Monetary Policy Department, which in 2014 was renamed the Economic Outlook and Monetary Policy Directorate. From 2007 to 2020 he served as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the European Central Bank.

In May 2020 he was appointed Deputy Head of the Directorate General for Markets and Payment Systems. Since April 2020, he has been a member of the Markets Committee of the Bank for International Settlements.

He has published numerous articles in Italian and international scientific journals, on topics mostly relating to macroeconomic modelling and monetary economics. He has taught statistics, econometrics and international and monetary economics at universities in Italy and abroad.
