The COVID-19 crisis poses an important challenge for many infrastructure systems in critical sectors, such as transportation and energy, which directly impacts essential social infrastructures such as healthcare and education.
On Friday, 29 January, an online seminar entitled 'Mobilizing Infrastructure Investments to achieve Transformative Recovery' was hosted by the G20 partner organization Global Infrastructure Hub and looked at how to make existing infrastructures more resilient and inclusive by improving their maintenance and promoting the development of digital and sustainable ones. The seminar aimed at encouraging an open dialogue between G20 members and international experts on the role of investment in infrastructure for a transformative economic recovery.
The Italian G20 Presidency supports the Global Infrastructure Hub's InfraChallenge and invites researchers, entrepreneurs and start-ups from all over the world to compete with transformative ideas and projects to ensure future infrastructures that are sustainable, resilient, innovative, and accessible to everyone.
This year, the competition is an integral part of the 2021 Italian G20 Presidency's infrastructure agenda. Applicants to the innovation challenge will help support the G20 Presidency's aim to promote quality infrastructure investment, also in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Discussions on the issue of infrastructure will continue tomorrow, Thursday 4 February, with a debate organized by the Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI) on 'Financing infrastructure investments for local communities'.
This first round of infrastructure-related debates will conclude with the second G20 Infrastructure Working Group meeting, scheduled for Tuesday, 9 February 2021.
