Conference "Luigi Einaudi: economic freedom and social cohesion"Rome, 13 May 2008

The workshop focussed on the fertile dialectic contrast between the two pillars of Einaudi's social policy thought. On one side, the Italian economist valued innovation, economic competition, changes in the social élite and the chance given to new entrepreneurs to start new enterprises. On the other side, he strongly felt the need to provide shelters to women and men, who may not necessarily accept the biting wind of competition as a desirable everyday life condition: in his view, professional associations, unions, small property, stable jobs protect people from the hardship of struggle.
Einaudi had an ethical and social view of the world, to which he dedicated much of his analytical effort as an economist, aimed at reconciling social reform with efficient allocation of resources.

The workshop material is available in Italian only.
