The Consolidated Laws on Banking and Finance empower the Bank of Italy to regulate many aspects of banking and financial intermediation, to ensure the stability, efficiency and competitiveness of the financial system.
The provisions are of a general nature. That is, they apply to all the intermediaries in a given category (banks, banking groups, investment firms etc), in order to guarantee equal treatment and competitive parity.
The Bank of Italy can issue various normative acts (circulars, regulations, and supervisory provisions), normally of a technical-financial nature.
Before their definitive promulgation, the Bank conducts public consultations enabling all interested parties to make observations, comments and proposals.
