The Consolidated Law on Banking and the Consolidated Law on Finance charge the Bank of Italy with regulating numerous aspects of banking and financial intermediaries' business in order to ensure the stability, efficiency and competitiveness of the financial system.
The provisions are of a general nature, i.e. they apply to all the intermediaries of the same type (banks, banking groups, securities firms, etc.), to ensure uniformity of treatment and competitive equality.
The Bank's legislative measures can be in various forms (supervisory measures, regulations and circulars) and normally address technical and financial matters.
Before the definitive version is issued, the Bank of Italy carries out a public consultation in which any interested party can make comments and proposals.
