Countering the financing of programmes for the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction

The United Nations and the European Union prohibit the provision of assistance or financial support to persons involved in programmes for the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has prepared guidelines for this matter.

On 27 May 2009 the Bank of Italy has issued operational guidelines on the conduct and controls intermediaries must adopt in their dealings with counterparties (i.e. clients) involved in programmes for the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
