Payment System

This section contains statistics on the payment system. A first group of time series regards the use by households and firms of retail payment services and instruments provided or issued by banks and non-banks.

A second group concerns the functioning of the clearing and settlement circuits managed by the Bank of Italy (for retail transactions, BI-COMP; for wholesale payments, BI-REL up to May 2008 and TARGET2 subsequently), with data on the participation of banks and non-banks and on the flows settled.

Lastly, a third group refers to securities, with special reference to securities on deposit in Italy and, up to January 2004, the clearing and settlement service for transactions in financial instruments.
