The Public Finances

The statistical publications for the main public finance indicators are available on this page.

The Bank of Italy calculates the general government debt on the basis of statistical rules established at European level. The monthly time series for this indicator are available from 1861 onwards; the methodological notes are accessible on this website in the section "Legal Framework and Methodology".

The data on the general government debt and borrowing requirement are released monthly in the Supplement "The Public Finances, borrowing requirement and debt", which also reports the composition of those aggregates by instrument and holding sector and subsector. This Supplement also provides data on local government debt and general government deposits.

The Supplement "Local Government Debt", published yearly, gives more detailed information on the composition of local government debt by sector, instrument and geographical area.

The Supplement "Public Finance Statistics in the European Union", published yearly, contains the annual data on general government net borrowing, debt and the main consolidated general government account items of the EU countries and the non-EU G7 countries (the United States, Japan and Canada). The time series are available from 1980 onwards.

The time series of the data published in the Supplements are available in the BIP on-line section of the website.
